This site is developed and maintained by Elizabeth Kryder-Reid to share her research on California mission landscape history. It invites learners of all ages to explore both the specific histories of the mission landscapes and to consider bigger issues around all the ways we produce the past - the sites we choose to preserve, the stories we tell, the pictures we take, and the things we make. This exploration of how we turn history into heritage also raises questions of why some stories are privileged and some left out a,d, ultimately, how historic sites play a part of our understanding of who we are and where we come from.
